On October 2, 1996, in the small town of Waurika, Oklahoma, 16-year-old Heather Rich snuck out of her bedroom in the middle of the night to see a friend. She never returned home and for 7 agonizing days, her parents did everything they could to find their daughter. Meanwhile, on the evening of October 9, a Texas rancher and his granddaughter saw something floating in Belknap Creek. Assuming a calf had slipped into the river upstream and drowned, he shot the body twice to sink it. The next morning, he realized the calf was still floating in the creek.
